Monteverde Garnet on Midori MD

Ink

Monteverde Garnet is a lovely magenta with some shading. Like the rest of the Monteverde inks I’ve written with, it flows smoothly and I didn’t experience any problems with the ink.

Monteverde Sapphire on Leuchtturm1917

Ink

Monteverde Sapphire is a vibrant blue. It shades beautifully and has a wet flow. There is the tiniest bit of sheen in the darker areas where the ink had pooled, it is not obvious unless you are looking really hard. There is some bleedthrough on Leuchtturm1917 paper.

Paper

I managed to get a LEUCHTTURM1917 planner for a cheap price at the end of the year when shops are clearing the unsold 2020 planners. It used the same 80gsm paper found in LEUCHTTURM1917 notebooks so I decided to use it for writing samples.

Monteverde Scotch Brown on Leuchtturm1917

Ink

Based on the name, I assumed Monteverde Scotch Brown will be the colour of whiskey. Instead the colour makes me think of chocolate and coffee. The ink has a wet flow and is easy to clean out of the pen. Personally, I find it difficult to use this ink for long because I keep having a craving for chocolate!

Monteverde Jade Noir on Rhodia

Ink

Monteverde Jade Noir is a dark green ink with shading. Although there are jade with such dark green shades, they are not common as jewellery pieces. At least not in my part of the world. Therefore this is not a colour I normally associate with jade.

Green is not a beloved colour, reminding me too much of disgust-filled childhood memories of eating vegetables. However I’m happy that I decided to buy this ink. It is so dark that it looks almost black at glance, then you take another look and realise there is a bit of colour to it. This is an ink that will won’t attract too much attention in professional settings. The shade of green makes me think of dark, rainy ancient forests, or moss-covered old statues, or deep pools overgrown with algae.

Monteverde Smoke Noir on Midori MD

Ink

Monteverde Smoke Noir is a medium grey ink. When it is wet, it looks black and turns lighter when it dries. The ink is darker than I expected and not really the colour I think of when I think of smoke. I guess that’s why there’s a “Noir” in the name.

There is little shading in this ink and it is not noticeable unless you really look for it. I also experience nib creep with this ink, but as it doesn’t affect the writing experience, I’m not too bothered with it. I feel this is a neutral colour that works well for professional settings and all kinds of drawing. Among all the inks, this ink had the most hard start problems, but once it started flowing, it flows very wet. It is not a problem with the pen as there are no such issues with other inks, only this ink.
