Monteverde Sapphire on Midori MD

Ink

Monteverde Sapphire is a vibrant blue. It shades beautifully and has a wet flow. There is the tiniest bit of sheen in the darker areas where the ink had pooled, it is not obvious unless you are looking really hard..

Diamine Prussian Blue on Traveler’s Company notebook

Ink

Diamine Prussian Blue is a unsaturated blue (blue black?) that feels a little on the dry side in a fine nib. It feels fine in a medium nib.

This wasn’t the colour that came to mind when I think of Prussian blue so I was a bit disappointed when I first used it. This colour made me think of old, faded jeans. After using it for a while, I started to enjoy the ink, as long as I no longer think of it as Prussian blue. I also felt it looked good when used for sketching.

Paper

Traveler’s Company notebooks uses the same MD paper as Midori notebooks. The two notebooks perform the same when using fountain pens so why am I doing another writing sample on the same paper? Because Midori MD notebooks uses cream-coloured paper and Traveler’s Company ruled notebook uses white-coloured paper. I feel that the colour of the paper also affects how the ink looks, and hence this post.

Monteverde Scotch Brown on Midori MD

Ink

Based on the name, I assumed Monteverde Scotch Brown will be the colour of whiskey. Instead the colour makes me think of chocolate and coffee. The ink has a wet flow and is easy to clean out of the pen. Personally, I find it difficult to use this ink for long because I keep having a craving for chocolate!

Van Dieman’s Diamonds are a Girl’s BFF on Midori MD

Ink

Van Dieman’s Diamonds are a Girl’s BFF is part of the Hollywood series. The ink is inspired by the dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

It is a shimmer ink so you need to shake the bottle before filling up your pen. I didn’t expect the shimmer to settled so quickly and the first time I filled up the pen, I didn’t get a lot of shimmer. The ink colour is a dark pink, almost purplish, and shows a lovely shading. It has a good consistent flow and I didn’t experience any clotting or hard starts. The shimmer is a pain to clean out of the pen, but that’s probably the case with all shimmer inks.

Vinta Terracotta on Midori MD

Ink

Vinta Terracotta (Damili 1572) is orange ink inspired by clay craftsmanship. It is brighter when wet, then dries to a earthy orange. It really looks like red clay, and also reminds me of autumn leaves.

I didn’t expect to love this ink so much. The more I used it, the more I love it. It shades beautifully and is easy to clean out.

Van Dieman’s Hanging Lake on Midori MD

Ink

Hanging Lake is part of Van Dieman’s Wildness series, inspired by the beauty of Tasmanian wilds.

The Hanging Lake is a blue-black ink which has no shimmer but has lovely shading. I love the shading of this ink and how it gradients from light to dark. When cleaning the pen after using this ink, I noticed it left some trace residue in the barrel. Despite this, I love the colour so much that I will definitely re-buy this when I finished my current supply. I will just have to spend more time and effort cleaning out the pen.

Van Dieman’s Elizabeth’s Violet Eyes on Midori MD

Ink

Elizabeth’s Violet Eyes is part of Van Dieman’s Hollywood series, inspired by Elizabeth Taylor’s famous violet eyes. It is a shading purple ink. It is not quite the colour of Elizabeth Taylor’s eyes which are more bluish, but it is still a beautiful colour.

Van Dieman’s Blackened Seas on Midori MD

Ink

Blackened Seas is part of Van Dieman’s Midnight series, inspired by colours after dark. As you would expect, there are dark colours in this series, but there are also some surprisingly bright colours, like yellow (inspired by the moon) and orange (inspired by bonfire). About half of them are also shimmering inks.

The Blackened Seas ink has no shimmer but has lovely shading. It is a dark teal ink. I love the shading of this ink and how it gradually turns from light to dark, unlike some inks which which have clearly defined areas between the light and dark portions (for example, see Lamy Turquoise). I didn’t time it so I cannot say for sure, but it feels like the ink takes slightly longer to dry then the other inks I’ve tried. The drying time is not long enough to be a deal breaker, but long enough to notice. I LOVE this colour and I will definitely re-buy this when I finished my current supply.

Van Dieman’s Pixie Parasols on Midori MD

Ink

Pixie Parasols is part of Van Dieman’s Tassie Seasons series, inspired by the colours of each Tasmania’s seasons. Pixie Parasols is from the Autumn season and inspired by Mycena Interrupta, a beautiful cyan blue mushroom.

The ink is a light cyan blue. It flows well and shades beautifully, but it has one fatal flaw – it is too light to read. Which is a pity as the colour is beautiful. When I was writing, the ink is so light that sometimes I unconsciously pressed harder on the paper. I won’t recommend this for normal writing.
