Birmingham Chrysan Themum on Muji Planting Tree

Ink

Chrysam Themum is a dusty violet with a dry flow. Sometimes a slight green-grey halo can be seen on some papers. It took me a while before I realised that the ink name could be a reference to the chrysanthemum flower. In my defence, the chrysamthemum flowers where I live are usually yellow and it never crossed my mind there can be other colours.

On Muji paper, there is shading, no sheen, a lot of feathering and a tiny bit of bleedthrough.

Red sky at night, sailors’ delight.
Red sky at morning, sailors’ warning.

On Muji paper, there is no shading, no sheen, a lot of feathering and some bleedthrough. The colour is also less saturated compared to how it appears on Midori MD paper.

Kakimori Muji Planting Tree

Kakimori #01 Po on Muji Planting Tree

Ink

Kakimori is the name of a stationery store in Tokyo. In late 2021, they released a line of pigment inks with names inspired by Japanese onomatopoeia. They are housed in cute round glass bottles meant to evoke the shape of a water droplet on a flat surface.

Each ink has a brief writeup that evokes a certain imagery and feeling for the colour. I admit that I bought some inks based more on the imagery it evokes than any actual interest in the colour itself. For Po:

A colour tucked away in our hearts. Po is the way we blush when falling in love; the warmth of a face admired from afar.

Kakimori website

I’m tickled that Japan has a sound effect for blushing. Granted these are mostly used in manga so perhaps it helps to differentiate between the different types of blushing.

The ink is a bright red colour with a wet flow. In shading, it ranges from unsaturated red to saturated red. I thought the lighter parts do resemble the colour of a person blushing (at least based on what I’ve seen in anime).

Ink colour residue left on fountain pen nib

I expected it to be harder to clean out the pen due to the fact that it’s a pigment ink but it was easy to clean out of the barrel. I did not have to dismantle the pen. The problem is with the ink that had dried, like those on the nib. It was hard to clean away the dried ink and soaking in water did not seem to make much difference.

On Muji paper, there is no shading, no sheen, a lot of feathering and a lot of bleedthrough.

Lennon Tool Bar Saira on Muji Planting Tree

Brand

Lennon Tool Bar is a Taiwanese company founded in 2014. Their focus is on producing and promoting the craft of indigo dying. Then they started producing fountain pen inks, and were known for their beautiful blue inks.

Ink

Saira is the name of the 2019 Autumn Limited Series. Saira is the scientific name of the Pacific saury fish. On the bottle label, there is another name – 秋刀魚 – which is the Japanese name. In Mandarin, the words literally translates to “autumn knife fish”. I’ve always thought 秋刀魚 to be a beautiful name. The first word indicates the best season to eat them, for autumn is the time when the fish are at their fattest. The second word represents the knife-like body shape of the fish.

I had eaten the fish a few times at Japanese restaurants. It is usually served grilled, maybe sprinkled with some salt and lemon juice. The meat is fatty and flavourful. There are a lot of small bones so one needs to eat it slowly and carefully.

This ink is medium grey in colour and has a wet flow. On Muji Planting Tree paper, there is shading, no sheen, a little feathering and no bleedthrough.

Van Dieman’s Native Cornflower on Muji Planting Tree

Ink

Van Dieman’s is a family business located in Tasmania. Their inks are mainly inspired by the nature and beauty of their surroundings.

Native Cornflower is part of Van Dieman’s Tassie Seasons series, inspired by the colours of each Tasmania’s seasons. This is one of the colours of spring. The ink is a medium blue colour with a wet flow. I find it easy to clean the ink out of the pen.

I wasn’t expecting the colour because my impression is that cornflower blue has a slight tinge of purple. But I do like this shade of blue so no complaints here.

On Muji Planting Tree paper, there is very little shading, no sheen, a lot of feathering and some bleedthrough.
